Monte Volpe Mendocino County Pinot Grigio
Pinot Grigio has quickly become one of the most popular white grape varieties in the world. This rust-gray tinted skinned grape, enjoyed for centuries, is said to be a mutation of the Pinot Noir grape. However, it seems unsure whether it is a red or white wine grape, hence, grigio, meaning gray. Monte Volpe is the oldest producer of Pinot Grigio in California.

Monte Volpe Mendocino County Primo Rosso
Primo Rosso, first red in Italian, is a blend of many old world varietals, many which have been grown here for over a century: Zinfandel, Primitivo, Carignane, Petite Sirah and Syrah were grown on the benchlands and hillsides of the Ukiah and Redwood Valleys. This grape is a relative of the very mutative Pinot Noir and it gets its name from the fine white hairs on the underside of the grape leaf which from a distance resembles baking flour, thus “The Miller” (Meunier in French.) The Pinot Meunier grape is native to Burgundy and Champagne where it is used as a valuable blending component of many champagnes, where it adds fruitiness and softness to these wines.

Smith-Madrone Spring Mountain Napa Valley “Cooks Flat” Cabernet Sauvignon
This is a limited production wine created by the careful selection and blending of a small group of the best barrels the vintage has to offer.
This wine is an absolute classic. Superlative barely can do it justice. It opens with masses of black currant, black cherry and all shades of blue-black fruit pouring out of the glass in an endless wave of heady perfume. Oh, my!
The promise of the aroma is realized at the first sip. It’s that magic combination of power and finesse, flavor and grace, that everyone tries for, but is seldom achieved.
Here it is in abundance. Dark, vibrant fruit, sleek and seductive, rises out of a potent mid-palate that cloaks a great inner energy. And for all that, as good as it is now, the lovely acidity and fine grain tannins suggest that there is still plenty of time for the wine to grow and develop. Is it possible to improve on perfection? The 2016 Cook’s Flat Reserve is a wine that may well be able to provide a definitive answer to that tantalizing question.
Each individually numbered and tissue-wrapped bottle of Cook’s Flat Reserve represents our uncompromising pursuit of perfection in winemaking. The tissue is a copy of the U.S. Land Office patent, signed by President Chester A. Arthur, granting
ownership of the land to George Cook. That original document hangs in the winery and is an important part of our history. We chose this name in tribute to George Cook, the first owner of the property and the person who originally planted the vines here in the 1800s.
Smith-Madrone was founded in 1971 with the purchase of 200 wild acres at the very top of Spring Mountain in the Napa Valley. Over the years we have personally cleared the and, planted and nurtured grapes on 37 of these acres and have made wine from those grapes since 1977. Our vines grow at an elevation of 1,800-feet on very steep slopes (up to 35%) in red “Aiken” soil, derived from weathered volcanic materials and sedimentary rock.

The first thing you notice about the 2018 Chardonnay is its lovely green/gold color. Then it’s the oh-so-promising aroma: a little toasty, a little lemony, some stone fruit.
Sure enough, on the palate, the wine delivers as promised. And then some. It is firm, crisp and full simultaneously without being the least bit ponderous. In spite of its power, it maintains a graceful, elegant stance in perfect harmony with a succulent mid-palate.
The second half of the wine transitions seamlessly to a long, clean, crisp and altogether lipsmacking finish. The overall impression is one of bright flavors, youthful vigor & superb structure.

Smith-Madrone Spring Mountain Napa Valley Riesling
Classic Riesling nose of honeysuckle, grapefruit and wet stone with just a hint of petrol binding everything together into a harmonious whole that couldn’t be anything other than Riesling. If anything, it’s even better on the palate. It has an impressive silky texture complemented by an equally impressive depth of flavor mid-palate. Lively and fruity and clean with intense varietal character. The acidity is integrating nicely, but the wine still exhibits a tasty crispness at the finish. It’s a lovely expression of a mountain grown Riesling.
This wine is made from mountain grown grapes, honoring the international tradition of Riesling which thrives on steep hillsides.
